Evolve Portland in a Soft Industrial Kitchen
OBJECTIVE
In a classic Victorian terrace, Joe’s kitchen and dining room were dark and old fashioned, so when he decided to update the space by opening it up into a large kitchen-diner, it was the ideal time to modernise the kitchen. The plan? Something light, bright and contemporary, including a replacement for the old, stained wooden worktop.
OBSERVATION
Joe chose dark grey floor units, leaving the wall free for open shelving, and adding in a peninsula unit to allow for breakfast bar seating. The inspiration for the space was soft industrial with natural influences; black hardware, untreated wood and white textured metro tiles are perfectly complemented by Evolve surfaces in Portland.
On a colour matched light grey core, Portland Evolve is 12.5mm thick, super tough and waterproof, making it ideal for a family kitchen where both style and practicality influence the overall design. Using two 3000mm x 650mm worksurfaces, and a 3000mm x 950mm breakfast bar, Joe’s independent fitter created a U-shaped kitchen with a 300mm overhang on the peninsula for a forward-facing seating area.
The undermount sink sits flush, and engraved drainer grooves expose the coloured core of the worktop. Evolve is solid core laminate, making it waterproof and the perfect match for an undermount sink with no risk of water ingress.
OUTCOME
Portland surfaces on the slimline Evolve profile make a striking addition to the kitchen. Joe and his family are delighted with the outcome. Joe says, “We love it because it looks like real stone, especially with the grey core. When we tell our friends that it’s actually laminate they can’t believe it.”
“Our fitter hadn’t worked with Evolve before but he read the installation guide and watched the video online to see how to work with it. Our favourite feature is the integrated drainer grooves.”
